Match Report - Newmarket Town Ladies v Cambridge United WFC Reserves

A Tuesday night trip to the Ridgeons Stadium in Newmarket to watch a potential title deciding match from the Cambridgeshire Women's Premiership under the floodlights, Newmarket Town Ladies v Cambridge United WFC Reserves.

A meeting between two ambitious sides, both looking to win the Cambridgeshire Women's Premiership title this season. Not only only sides still in the title race however just a point separates the top 4 going into tonight's game. Cambridge United WFC Reserves a point in front head of the 3 sides below, Netherton United Ladies, Cambridge University Women and Newmarket Town Ladies who are in their lowest position ironically having been in the top two pretty much all season.

Cambridge United WFC Reserves have 4 league games left to play, Newmarket Town Ladies 3 a win puts them back on top, for Cambridge United a chance to go 4 points clear of the rest, gain a huge advantage in the run in. Having already won the Junior Invitation Cup and then the League Cup just 4 days ago the treble very much on for the visitors.

A smart state of the art cork based artificial pitch an opportunity to play under the lights. The weather changeable at the moment to say the least needed the suncream down in North London on Sunday, this evening on the way to the game the car was bombarded by hailstones, needed the umbrella albeit for 5 minutes as the rain stayed away after that the skies dark the temperature dropping rapidly. Opted for the covered stand beside the refreshment booth and clubhouse to view the game.

A challenging match report tonight as one side had no numbers upon their shirts & I use numbers for my notes... most of the time. A smart looking new white skirt with amber trim across the shoulders for Cambridge United WFC Reserves only upon picking the shirts up the numbers had yet to be added along with black shorts and amber socks. Thankfully I had seen them twice recently in both finals and was confident of getting most right. It's Cambridge to get the game kicked off 1st half. Know most of the Newmarket squad too so had they had no numbers on their shirts either I'd have managed, as it was they did lined up opposite wearing yellow shirts with blue trim, blue shorts with a vertical yellow stripe on the sides with yellow socks with two blue and white hooped bands.

Newmarket put pressure on the ball in midfield straight away, winning it Antonia Smith plays the ball out to the right on the diagonal for Abbi Griffin moving forwards bringing the ball down into her stride looks to drive inside into the box, Cambridge's Carolyn Sarafian comes in across her run to tackle and send the ball out for a throw in. Moments later the ball is in the back of the net, Newmarket pressing on the right, Abbie Marshall sending a high looping ball into the air heading towards goal goes over her as she goes down under challenge the referee gives a foul against Newmarket.

Newmarket Town Ladies striker Nadine Basson looking to bring the ball do play
Abbie Marshall in behind.

Jess Linger playing at right back gets forwards for Newmarket plays a long ball on the diagonal in towards the far post, Marshall closing in, Cambridge captain Emily Ingle heads the ball to safety. Newmarket send the ball up field into striker Nadine Basson 30 yards out seeing the ball down off her chest turns and sends the ball on into the area, Cindy Ponder making the run going right strikes the ball 1st time her effort whipping behind the goal.

Cambridge striker, Lauren Gibson very nearly capitalises as she charges down a back-pass played into Newmarket goalkeeper Eloise Hope just inside her area the keepers clearance smashing against Gibson dropping to her left she gets to it before Hope shooting before the keeper can recover pulls he effort wide of the near post. An end to end start to the game, Sarafian stops Newmarket's Nadine Basson at one end brings the ball out plays it up through the middle with Ebony Rule timing her run perfectly, Hope comes rushing out to meet her as she enters the box makes the blocking save as she pulls the trigger.

Cambridge United WFC Reserves
Emma Roberts
Newmarket try to get Marshall clear on the right wing, Emma Roberts tackles the ball out for a throw level with the top of the box, Kristen Hummel heads the ball on dropping into Basson's feet right corner of the box she looks to drives across the box find a half a yard to take a strike, Teonie Peyton slides in to win possession for Cambridge. The ball with Ingle on the right goes long again with Rule on the move early beating the offside trap taking the ball on through the middle, Yasmin Woodfield has the extra pace in her legs to catch Rule up puts her right foot in to take the ball from the striker as they enter the box.

Cindy Ponder brings the ball over halfway on the right side for Newmarket, Basson receives it into her feet laying in off to Griffin inside her before going on to run in behind into the area right of goal Griffin's return pass finds her, Sarafian comes across lunging in to put the ball away for a through in the corner.

Penalty! From the resulting throw sent up into the area right side an infringement is spotted by the referee who points to the spot, a penalty awarded to Newmarket in the 11th minute. Ponder sets the ball down on the spot, hits it straight down the middle and straight at goalkeeper, Carroll who holds on to it comfortably to save.

Sarah Carroll saves the penalty kick for Cambridge United WFC Reserves

Cambridge build an attack down the left, Peyton getting the ball into the area as she goes to ground, Rule left side puts a cross along the top of the six yard box finds Lucy Gateson doesn't connect cleanly with the ball screws away from goal, Hope throws herself at it smothering the ball ending the move. Peyton is struggling holding the back of her thigh he night is over as she comes off limping, Kirsty Geal recently signed by Cambridge comes on to take her place on the left wing.

Hummel over on the left side runs in towards the top corner of the area sends a diagonal ball into the area for Griffin far side knocking the ball in closer to goal looks to hit her shot hard, Carroll across her goal saves at close range at her near post. Basson having taken a knock a few minutes ago has come off for Newmarket. Gibson taking the ball forwards for Cambridge puts it into Rule back to goal inside the box good hold up play as Tahnee Perfect gets in behind overlapping Gibson, sends a cross high into the box, Newmarket captain Beth Woodfield gets up to head the ball behind for the corner.

GOAL! Cambridge take the lead from the corner kick the delivery good a high ball dropping into the six yard box near post Gibson has evaded her marker gets up unchallenged to head the ball down past Hope into the back of the net 0-1 midway through the 1st half.

GOAL! Moving into the last 5 minutes of the 1st half Cambridge double their lead is a superb strike by Gibson at the top of the area as the ball is flighted into her from the right, leaning back as it drops onto her foot turns hitting the shot first time the ball looping up curling past Hope into the goal beyond. 0-2.

Newmarket push on as the 1st half moves into stoppage time, Griffin onto a long crossfield ball on the right brings it down looking to take the ball into the box Geal blocks conceding a corner. A good ball in, Winnewisser coming to met the ball six yards out near side gets a firm header in the ball directing it on across goal goes wide at the far post.

Half-time Newmarket Town Ladies 0-2 Cambridge United WFC Reserves

A 2-0 lead for Cambridge at the break, Gibson scoring both finding space for both goals from good deliveries after Newmarket missed the opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot. A good tempo to the game both side looking to get their wide players on the ball, Cambridge happy to sit deeper break up an attack little room for Newmarket to get into the box at 2-0 however the game is delicately balanced, the next goal a vital one for whoever can score it.

Newmarket kick-off the 2nd half, have made two changes at half-time with both Laura Bailey and Lauren Deller on the field. The home side get the ball into the final 3rd right from kick-off, holding it up on the right wing before winning a free-kick players pile into the area a good ball into the middle of the six yard box, Sarafian winning the header clears the ball out of the box. Newmarket keep possession are camped in the Cambridge half in the opening minutes without finding an clear chance to send the ball in towards goal.

An opportunity for Cambridge to break the ball slid through to Gateson coming inside from the right drives fro the area, Beth Woodfield coming across putting in a strong tackle to win the ball as Gateson goes to pull the trigger. From the resulting corner kick the ball is headed out of the six yard box by Ponder goes back to Gateson out wide having take the corner looks to shift the ball down the line plays her cross in behind goal.

Ingle bringing the ball on fires it up into the box looking for Rule back to goal 10 yards out holds up well spots Perfect coming towards her outside the box rolls the ball towards her, Perfect connects 20 yards out sending a rasping ball in towards goal, Hope makes a fantastic save diving to her right getting a glove on the ball pushing it wide, then recovers quickly as Gibson going after it turns inside and tries to put in it from an acute angle Hope jumping claims the ball.

Perfect plays the ball into the run of Gateson on the right, looking to twist inside as she moves into the box is tackled by Newmarket's Olivia Orme. A good spell for Cambridge as they keep possession inside the Newmarket half. Basson is back on the pitch for Newmarket replacing Ponder. On the ball drives on through the middle, Griffin to her right plays the pass towards her sliding in to win it top of the area Roberts blocks for Cambridge.

Marshall returns to the action for Newmarket going left side replacing Bailey. Cambridge bring off Gateson sending on Kirsten Burt. A great take down inside the D from the substitute as Burt the ball is played in long from the left, controlling well turns putting the ball past Hope runs narrowly wide. A free-kick for Newmarket on halfway as Marshall is fouled, the ball is cleared, Roberts catching it full on the face, a little dazed shrugs it off however carries on without needing treatment.

Rule goes on through the middle after the ball played in over the top by Whitehurst, Hope comes racing out to meet her Rule 1st to it lobs the keeper, Hope turns sees the ball drop wide of goal.

A minutes silence held before the game in honour of Paul McCann, a coach with Riverside FC who tragically passed away whilst falling ill competing in the Great Eastern Run recently.

With Cambridge United WFC's 1st team game in the FAWPL Cup away to Portsmouth FC Ladies postponed early in the morning the Reserves side was ale to draft in Verity Crook to keep goal for today's match. New signing Jess Harvey having come in from Peterborough United Ladies was starting on the bench. Netherton United Ladies had a new signing on their bench too, Anna Hatcher joining the club from March Town United Ladies. It's the visitors to kick-off the 1st half, Cambridge wearing amber shirts and socks with black shorts. Netherton lined up opposite wearing red and black shirts with black shorts and socks.

Cambridge work the ball out to the right wing early on captain Emily Ingle pushing up that side of the pitch to win the ball, her attempted cross blocked by Netherton's Dita Upesjure defending that side of the pitch the ball out for a throw-in. Linking up with Ebony Rule from the throw Ingle sends the ball into the box, Netherton defend Camen Giles heading the ball clear of the area. The visitors continue to push forwards in the opening exchanges the ball won back in midfield is played up into Teonie Payton inside the D, helps the ball on into the box with Rule getting onto the end of it right of goal, shoots low aiming near post, Netherton goalkeeper Katie Cooper has the angle covered gathers the ball into her arms.

Netherton get the ball forwards quickly, Jenna Nairn sending it long for Emily Johnson up front to chase, Cambridge are playing with 3 at the back, Johnson runs in behind Carolyn Sarafain on the left of the 3, looks to take the ball on into the area, Sarafain gets back with the attacker getting a foot on the ball to push it away from her runs on to Crook who claims the ball.

Pressuring the Netherton defence on the left wing, Peyton wins Cambridge the 1st corner of the game. Is a good delivery fired into the box with plenty of pace, Liz Pamplin (who can and has played in every position on the pitch) is up from the back coming onto the ball gets her head on it, puts it over the crossbar from 10 yards out. Is a competitive game a few strong challenges coming in early on complaints from both sides.

Teonie Peyton on the ball for Cambridge United WFC Reserves
looks to get away from Netherton's Georgia Parrett
Mel Findlater pays the ball out of the Cambridge half up to Rule, back to goal she heads the ball down into the advancing Gabrielle Whitehurst she plays it to her midfield partner Laura Baker, returning to action after an injury in early pre-season. 25 yards from goal Baker juggles the ball between her feet before hitting a shot towards goal on the volley, up and over the defence drops safely into Cooper's gloves. The visitors have Netherton on the back foot in the opening 10 minutes. From a throw on the left side, Lauren Gibson looks to turn on the edge of the box as the ball is played into her feet falling back as she strikes the ball, lacks the power to beat Cooper at her near post.

GOAL! The early pressure from the visitors tells as they take the lead on 11 minutes, working the ball up the right flank Cambridge win a throw, Ingle and Rule link up to get the ball into the box, a Netherton defender throws a leg out to deflect the ball out of the area is loose as it runs across the D central, is a race for the ball, Baker for Cambridge getting there just ahead of the defender takes the ball inside past her then hits a right foot shot low across the keeper into the bottom corner for her 1st goal of the season 0-1.

Laura Baker with the opening goal of the game for Cambridge United WFC Reserves
Netherton look to move the ball forwards from the restart, captain Megan Parrett in midfield plays the ball out to Emily Johnson moving right to the right, turns back inside passing the ball inside to the advancing Nairn central, picks out Alice MacNicol coming inside from the left getting hold of the ball as she runs inside the box, left of goal the angle is against her as she squeezes a shot away the ball running along the ground Crook down to collect at her near post.

The game is stretched from one end to the other with Cambridge playing it over the top for Gibson, Cooper rushing out of her box to kick clear manages to pick out Johnson on the right side, Georgia Parrett makes a run inside receives the ball, hits the cross on the move outside the box, Yasmin Green is there on the penalty spot the ball just evades her as she throws a leg at it. MacNicol has a pop at goal from distance for Netherton up and over the Cambridge defence like Baker's earlier effort drops safely for Crook to take cleanly.

A throw on the left deep inside the Netherton half brings Cambridge a corner kick the delivery his headed near post by Gibson into the middle of the area, Megan Parrett heads the ball away. A freaky deflection puts Cambridge's Rule in on goal as Hannah Johnson's attempted clearance smashes against her own team mate having push out from the back the deflection sees the ball spin in behind Rule reacting quickest is after it carrying the ball into the area is one on one with the keeper, her touch just a fraction heavy as she arrives in the box allowed Cooper committed to sliding in at her feet to get hold of the ball pull it into her body on the ground.

The strong tackling continues and Cambridge feeling they aren't getting the decisions are making their protests vocal. Johnson is caught in possession at the back by Gibson the Cambridge striker nicking the ball on the left outside the box, takes it on into the area looks to curl the ball into the top corner across goal, good save from Cooper as she throws herself at the ball pushes it wide her defence clearing far side. Cambridge keep possession inside the Netherton half, Sarafain coming forwards as Peyton wins a throw on the left, linking up with Baker, Sarafain is played in down the line coming into the area her cross is deflected behind by Hannah Johnson for a corner kick. The delivery into the six yard box his headed up into the air by Parrett, dropping amongst bodies is cleared away to the left top of the area, Baker latching onto the ball sends it back in towards goal, Cooper dives as the ball goes across her goal but leaves it confident it is racing wide.

Netherton United Ladies, Alice MacNicol
Peyton has said too much for the referees liking and get's her name in the book. Winning the ball wide on the right for Netherton, Georgia Parrett passes the ball in field into Nairn has MacNicol to her left plays the ball into her feet takes on the strike from distance whipping the ball up over the Cambridge defence from outside the box the shot whistles over the crossbar. Giles takes a painful knock defending for Netherton at the back, wants to continue but can't the home side making a change sending on Anna Hatcher to join the defence.

Play is drawn over the the right of the pitch with Cambridge attacking, Peyton moving central is in space and play is spread across to her as Gibson holds the ball up before laying it into Baker her pass finding Peyton, takes the ball on into the box, Netherton's Lucy Johnson gets back to try and force for wide of goal, left of the target getting closed down, Peyton gets a shot away with the outside of her boot runs wide across the face of goal. Rule is played in on goal moments later Gibson playing her in behind her shot is blasted in wide of the goal.

GOAL! Late into the 1st half and Cambridge double their lead. Are awarded a free-kick some 40 yards out to the right of the Netherton box. Baker over the ball as players pile forwards, flights the ball into the area near post area, 2 Netherton defenders go for it comes off the shoulder of one falling inside the six yard box favourably for Cambridge's Whitehurst travelling forwards, the ball dropping into her path makes no mistake getting her foot over the ball sending her shot across the goal and into the back of the net 0-2.

Half-time Netherton United Ladies 0-2 Cambridge United WFC Reserves

A goal at either end of the 1st half sees Cambridge lead the match 2-0 with a strong 1st half display. Creating plenty of opportunities inside the Netherton final 3rd have had the home side on the back foot for much of the 1st 45 minutes. A few of the Netherton players letting themselves get distracted by the verbals flying around haven't been at their best. Haven't been able to get their strikers in behind the Cambridge back 3 who have won most things in the air. 2-0 is always a tricky scoreline all to often the next goal has a huge influence on where the final result will go as the 2 sides line up for the 2nd half, Netherton to kick-off.

An early corner for Cambridge as Baker gets her foot on the ball sends a pass out to Ingle wide on the right taking the ball down the line Upesjure prevents the cross coming in turning the ball behind. The ball is sent long across the top of the six yard box, Pamplin far side gets something on the ball sends it high over the top of goal.

GOAL! An early goal in the 2nd half for Cambridge sees them extend their lead. Peyton full of running on the left wins the visitors a throw the ball is retained that side as players drift forwards through the middle, Findlater having been shielding the back 3 for much of the game is up field in front of the Netherton area as the ball is played in towards her left of the D she sees the bouncing ball onto her foot hitting it on the half volley getting it up and over the keeper to drop into the back of the net beyond with just 4 minutes of the 2nd half played 0-3. Her 1st goal for Cambridge.

Savannah Evans comes on for Netherton. Cambridge make a change too bringing on McKenzie McGranor for Peyton. Straight away the substitute has a chance on goal ahead of play as the ball is played out from the back comes in field with Ingle moving inside helps the ball on into the box from 25 yards out McGranor gets her head on the ball tries to power it around Cooper pushes the ball wide of goal. Netherton United Ladies, Lucy Johnson

Before it is taken Netherton make a change Megan Parrett back on with Georgia coming off. Lucy Johnson does well for Netherton defending the corner getting hold of the ball play it out of the area before sending it up field, Baker from a deeper position regains possession looks to send the ball into the area, too long Cooper reaching up can pull the ball down into her body.

Whitehurst bringing the ball over half-way passes into Gibson back to goal holds it up with Baker going past making a move to get into the box, Gibson attempts to roll the ball into her path inside the box Cooper commits early coming out to the edge of her area sliding in to push the ball away from the attacker. Harvey getting hold of the ball on the wing looks to lift the ball back in towards goal, Cooper back on her feet quickly snatches the ball down holding onto the shot.

Cambridge bring players forward to attack another corner kick on the left, the initial ball into the box is headed back out towards the taker Ingle, sends the ball back in central, Gibson tries to get her head on the ball, Hatcher defends well getting their 1st to clear the ball. Cooper gets up amongst the crowd gathered near post to punch the ball on wide across the six yard box. A double change for Cambridge, Carroll and Findlater coming off, Ellen Green and Vicky Hoover coming on with 15 minutes left to play. Has been a heated contest between Hannah Johnson and Gibson all game both are called to the referee, Gibson yellow carded for dissent when her objections go too far.

Lauren Gibson & Anna Hatcher
Harvey attempts to turn in behind to attack the box on the right side outside the box as Whitehurst gets the ball into her feet, moving into the box Upesjure recovers to close her down and slides in to take the ball out for a corner. Going long the ball is cleared the area cleared, Cambridge come again Hoover winning the ball deep in midfield plays it into Baker who picks out Harvey right, crosses the ball along to face of the box for Gibson closed down quickly by Hatcher shifts the ball to get a shot away doesn't get a good connection with the ball spins wide along the ground. Gibson's last action of the game as she comes off, Rule back on.

Baker is brought down right on the edge of the area as she attempts to get into the box, left of the D it's Baker over the ball, goes for goal her six flashing wide across the six yard box. A corner for Cambridge left side the delivery whipped into the six yard box, McGranor central gets her head on the ball places it up over the crossbar. Into the final minutes of the match Baker is brought down again 25 yards out in a central position.   This is the 1st time I've travelled to watch Cambridge WFC Reserves at their home ground this season was a short hop down the A14 to Greater Cambourne, the pitch on Back Lane on a recreation ground offering a range of sporting facilities. Has been pleasant and warm day and this weather continues into the evening.

                                        (roll on roll off substitutes)

Cambridge in their kit of sky blue shirts and socks with navy shorts get the 1st half underway against Fulbourn lined up in claret and sky blue shirts claret shorts and socks. Is a tentative opening with both sides probing with the ball into the others half. Cambridge eventually try a couple of longer passes looking to send their attackers beyond the Fulbourn defence but on both occasions goalkeeper Emma D'Costa is in place to comfortably claim the ball.

Bringing the ball up the left side into the Fulbourn half Cambridge's Kayleigh Whitehead plays a great cross field pass into Becky Russell on the edge of the area, has too many defenders around her to turn and get her shot away before rolling the ball back to Sarah Mosley her shot is blocked at point blank range, shouts for hand ball but little time to get them out of the way the referee waves play on.

D'Costa is across her goal to the left out to close down and grab the ball before Cambridge's Clara Greed can steal in on it from the wing as the diagonal ball is put into her path.

A good dribbling run from Fulbourn's Kirsty Geal on the right can travel at pace with the ball at her feet, has Ebony-Jade Rule in attack coming across to support her, giving her the ball Rule sends in a low cross looking for Krissie Taylor making up the ground on the left Cambridge goalkeeper Tafadzwa Mhunduru is down to gather the ball however has a defender in front of her who hooks it away from danger.

Fulbourn Bluebirds Kirsty Geal

Cambridge are squeezing the ball high up the pitch early on and as a result are seeing more of the ball inside the Fulbourn half have runners left and right in Greed and Becky Russell. A long pass from inside the Cambridge half sends Greed through into space and the area on the left takes on the shot hitting it low and hard towards the near post, D'Costa has it covered dropping low to make the save the ball put behind for a corner.

GOAL! Cambridge's early possession eventually tells as they open the scoring the move starting from a free kick won on the right the ball is played into the edge of the area not clearing the 1st defender the ball is put back out into the middle coming to Whitehead free in space 30 yards out as everyone steps looks to step up she fires a shot back in, D'Costa starts to come as the ball bounces before her misjudges it and is unfortunate as the pace on the shot takes it up and over her dropping into the net beyond 1-0.

Halfway through the half Fulbourn get on the attack straight from the restart a shot is swung in towards Cambridge's goal from a long way out sees Mhunduru flinging herself across her goal and making the save. From a throw deep in the left Fulbourn's Rule and Sharon Pinner combine exchanging headers to the right of the area before Pinner shoots her effort off target.

More than once in the game Fulbourn's Abigail Molloy has come to the rescue making the vital interception getting to a Cambridge cross field pass intended to send greed away into space on the left. Greed is 1st to the ball this time though is racing clear towards the area looking to come inside fires a shot in looking to smash it over D'Costa hits the bar and goes over.
Fulbourn Bluebirds Abigail Molloy

Fulbourn attacks are limited Rule is doing what she can to hold the ball up with Geal and Taylor trying to provide support right and left has Sarah-Louise Bodger central. Getting onto the ball on the right Rule plays the pass into Bodger left of the D meeting it with her head she turns it goalwards, Mhunduru is across to make the save and sets up a counter attack which sends Mosley in beyond the Fulbourn defence she strikes the ball early gets plenty of pace on the ball but puts it straight at D'Costa who holds on to it making the save.

Triple change for Cambridge with Greed, Whitehead and captain Emma Roberts leaving the pitch with Liz Pamplin, Maria Davies and Ellen Green coming on. Cambridge hit the cross bar again through Gemma Clark who has moved out to the left the ball finds her as she peels off her marker coming into the box she shoots from a tight angle gets the ball over D'Costa but again the ball clips the bar drops back into play before Fulbourn get it away.

GOAL! Into the final minutes of the 1st half and Cambridge double their lead with Clark scoring the goal. Given the ball on the left flank she takes on her marker skipping past her with the ball pushes on into the area looks to hit her shot across the keeper and places it into the net at the far post 2-0.

Cambridge have time for another attack as we go into 1st half injury time the ball played from left to right this time sends Russell clear behind the Fulbourn back line D'Costa is racing out to the edge of her area to close her down, Russell manages to get her shot past the keeper but pulls her attempt wide of the goal.

Half-time Cambridge WFC Reserves 2-0 Fulbourn Bluebirds

A comfortable 1st half from Cambridge have scored 2 goals and fashioned several chances their ability to break beyond the Fulbourn defence keeping the visitors pinned back not prepared to commit the players forwards in attack with the wide players struggling to get up to support Rule in attack.

Fulbourn kick off the 2nd 45 the forward pass cut out by Cambridge and they immediately send the ball out to Russell on the right she looks to take it down the pitch, has Lucy Clarkson for company the Fulbourn defender pushing her wide delaying the cross, Russell eventually squeezes the ball through by then though Eleanor Tod has come across to the near post to clear the ball.

Clarkson intercepts this time with Pamplin in the centre looking to sends Russell away down the right again. Cambridge are still attacking not sitting back on their 2 goal lead, have the ball in front of the Fulbourn area a shot is hit low deflected behind for a corner on the right.

GOAL! It's Russell to play the ball into the area from the corner is a good delivery plenty of pace on the ball finds it's way through to the back post and to Pamplin who rises unmarked to head the ball down and into the back of the net 3-0.

Fulbourn win their 1st corner of the match it's Geal to put the ball in from the right into a crowded near post Cambridge scramble it away the ball popping back out to the right is flung back in clears everyone before Mhunduru sees it into her gloves.

A fantastic save from D'Costa as Cambridge's Clark races clear of the defence is in on goal hits the shot on the run aiming for the bottom left corner, the Fulbourn keeper is down sharply to deflect the ball away for a corner. The set piece is cleared from the area comes all the way back to Cambridge's Robyn Phillips, she has a strike for goal places it over.
Cambridge make full use of their substitutes with another triple switch Nicola Geoghan, Phillips and Mosley having a rest, Roberts, Whitehead and Greed back on.

Rule has been ploughing a lone furrow up front for Fulbourn at times this evening, peeling out into the left channel the pass from the centre finds her head down she pushes on into the box looking to shot, has Mhunduru racing out to close the angle down dropping before her as Rule shoots smothers the shot. Fulbourn bring on Kathryn Morley for Bodger.

GOAL! Cambridge add a 4th goal to their tally coming after Fulbourn have actually started to enjoy a bit more possession on the ball inside the Cambridge half their attack breaking down though the ball is sent through the middle with Russell springing the offside trap heading for the D has a defender on her shoulder and D'Costa racing out to close her down their is a collision that leaves D'Costa grounded the ball popping loose to the left, Russell is onto it and plays the ball into the empty net beyond 4-0.

Her last action of the games as Russell comes off with Cullum and Fay, back on are Geoghan, Mosley and Phillips. For Fulbourn Rule is given a breather with Rosie Boyns coming on. D'Costa is called into action to make another save this time of Mosley breaking down the left for Cambridge sends the ball in looking to send it across the goal on the stretch D'Costa turns it behind for the corner.

Cambridge's Geoghan makes a determined run with the ball from inside her own half slipping the pass through to Green in attack she gets a shot away from the edge of the box is a tame effort however rolls through to D'Costa. Fulbourn are finally finding space on the flanks with Molloy pushed up now getting in behind the back line, Mhunduru is out quickly though to get to the ball before she can capitalise.

Cambridge WFC Reserves Nicola Geoghan

A good ball from Phillips inside her own half sets up a chance for Cullum up top receiving the ball in front of the Fulbourn area she makes a run across the D left to right before hitting a shot back in on the turn, places the ball over the bar.

The final whistle blows and Cambridge WFC Reserves wrap up a comfortable 4-0 victory over Fulbourn to move onto 23 points 2 behind Huntingdon Two Ladies the last game of the season for both sides this coming Sunday 17th May 2pm KO Jubilee Park. A good performance which stretched Fulbourn and kept them from bringing their own attacking players into the game limited their chances in attack.

Thanks to both clubs for helping me out with the team details look forwards to seeing both again next season.

Match Report - Fulbourn Bluebirds v Isleham United Ladies

Another midweek trip into Cambridgeshire to take in a 2nd game from the Cambridgeshire Women's Premiership, and an opportunity to see 2 new teams play for the 1st time Fulbourn Bluebirds and Isleham United Ladies.

Always look forwards to seeing another women's football team play for the 1st team and try to see as many as I can even though I invariably leave wanting to see them again, thus the number of women's football teams I want to see is always going up!

Like Huntingdon Town Ladies and Cambridge WFC Reserves who I saw play out a 1-1 draw last evening (see previous match report), Fulbourn Bluebirds and Isleham United Ladies are playing a midweek fixture in order to get all of their games in before the season closes.

Is a contest between the 2 clubs at the bottom of the Premiership table, a newly formed division this season by the Cambridgeshire FA, with women's football in Cambridgeshire having previously been split into a Northern and Southern Division, now 7 sides compete in the Premiership with a Championship North and South below.

Fulbourn Bluebirds find themselves in 6th place in the table with 9 points taken so far with 2 wins and 3 draws, have 3 fixtures left to complete can't be caught, but a positive result tonight gives them hope of climbing a place in the table as their last 2 fixtures are home and away to the team above them Cambridge WFC Reserves. Have a decent sized squad although this is just as well as the club have a number on the side-lines injured.

Isleham United Ladies have found life tough in the newly formed Premiership have been on the wrong end of some heavy defeats over the course of the season, have just the single league win and 3 points on the board will finish bottom. There single league win however was against todays opponents Fulbourn at the start of the season. Come to the ground today though with the bare bones 11 players have a number missing through injury too and are looking to bring in new faces for a new league campaign in particular are looking for a goalkeeper.

Fulbourn Bluebirds play in Fulbourn to the east of Cambridge. The venue the Home End on the villages Recreation Ground hosting a number of sporting facilities, tennis courts and cricket field to name a couple. It was the football pitch I was interested in however situated at the far end of the ground. The pitch looked in good nick well maintained with a healthy covering of grass. Really thought I was in for a wet one tonight having left torrential showers behind in Norfolk, by the time I arrived in Fulbourn however the sun was out it was a pleasant instead of getting wet however I was surrounded by a cloud of gnats

Fulbourn Bluebirds starting XI - Emma D'Costa, Lucy Clarkson, Eleanor Tod, Rachel Garrett Michela Garner, Abigail Molloy, Sharon Pinner, Krissie Taylor (C), Sarah-Louise Bodger, Kirsty Geal & Ebony-Jade Rule.
subs - Jess Anderson, Kathryn Morley, Rosie Boyns & Rebecca Sharp

Isleham United Ladies starting XI - Emily Mynott, Loiuse Davies, Becky Webb (C), Natalie Hill, Donna Woodcock, Sophie Brocklesby, Vicky Sievewright, Justyna Lipinska, Michelle Clark, Laura McAllister & Laura Todd.

                        (roll on roll off substitutes)

It's Isleham to kick off the first half kitted out in green shirts with black shorts and socks against Fulbourn lined up in claret and sky blue shirts, with claret shorts and socks. Isleham have an early offside call go against them the ball is put out to Abigail Molloy on the right of the midfield she plays the ball forwards clearing the Isleham back line Fulbourn have two players converging to get to the ball as it drops to the right hand corner of the area Ebony-Jade Rule and Sarah-Louise Bodger, it's Rule with the 1st touch knocking the ball to Bodger who puts her foot through the ball lashes it into the side netting.

Fulbourn win a their 1st corner played in from the right, Isleham's Natalie Hill comes to meet the ball headers it behind for a 2nd corner, this one is sent in beyond Hill comes into the crowd around the penalty spot Sharon Pinner for Fulbourn gets a head on the ball, too many bodies to go through the ball pops back to Bodger, chesting it down she puts her shot wide of goal.

Vicky Sievewright gets hold of the ball for Isleham in the centre both Laura McAllister and Laura Todd are looking to make runs for her in attack, Sievewright looks to send McAllister through, her 1st touch is a little too heavy however and the ball travels through into the gloves of Fulbourn goalkeeper Emma D'Costa.

Fulbourn have been doing most of the attacking bringing the ball forwards and getting players in beyond the Isleham defence leaving Emily Mynott who usually plays on the wing a little exposed in goal.

GOAL! Fulbourn open the scoring a little over 15 minutes played, the home side have possession of the ball on the left inside the Isleham players have gotten drawn over to the ball as Pinner sends in a diagonal ball into the box which comes through perfectly to Kirsty Geal, with her 1st touch she strokes the ball over the keeper to give Fulbourn the lead 1-0.

GOAL! Barely 3 minutes later and Fulbourn steal through to add a 2nd goal it's scored by Rule as she breaks beyond the Isleham defence to get on to the end of a cross fired in to the near post from the right, Rule meets the ball sweeping her shot in under the bar 2-0.

GOAL! It's a purple patch for Fulbourn that leaves Isleham reeling as 2 becomes 3 with the next attack, have numbers piled forwards the ball is put into Pinner on the edge of the area left of the goal she shoots, Mynott has started to come gets something in it blocking the ball but has Rule closing her down, gets some contact on the ball is going to creep over the line, Mynott lunging pulls the ball away but is unfortunate as the ball finds Pinner again eight yards out having continued into the box she gets her shot past the keeper this time 3-0.

3 goals in the space of 7 minutes have given Fulbourn control of the match has shaken Isleham. The home side bring on Jess Anderson for Lucy Clarkson. Keeping the attacks going Fulbourn win another 2 corners both times it's Hill though with the defensive clearance.

GOAL! Fulbourn score a 4th goal and their captain Krissie Taylor is involved in the build up with the ball retained down the left wing, Taylor comes inside has Jess Anderson making a supporting run as Mynott races out to the edge of the area to try and close them both down as the three come together the ball pops out and across to Rule who can send the ball into a empty net 4-0.

Isleham try to bring the ball up the pitch attacks are few and far between winning a throw deep on the right the cross picks out Becky Webb a good way out from goal she takes on the shot Emma D'Costa in the Fulbourn goal is behind it all the way. 3rd sub for Fulbourn with Bodger coming off and Kathryn Morley coming on.

Ebony-Jade Rule
GOAL! It's a 5th goal for Fulbourn and a 3rd for Rule as she completes a 1st half hat-trick. The pass dissects the Isleham defence to send Rule through beyond to take the ball in the area, having come and missed the ball last time Mynott stays rooted to her line this time with the momentum carrying her forwards Rule puts plenty of pace into her shot to fire the ball across the goal and into the bottom corner 5-0.

Sievewright looks the most likely to thread a ball through to the Isleham strikers McAllister and Todd with Fulbourn attacking they are defending a high line up on half way there is room to run in beyond, Todd is on the shoulder of the last defender when the pass does put her in D'Costa comes and committing early kicks the ball away from outside her area. At the back for Fulbourn Michela Garner tries having a go from 40 yards out a swerving shot Mynott is behind it palms it down before safely gathering.

GOAL! A 4th goal for Rule as Fulbourn add to their score, the no 9 springing the off side once again through into the area to the right of the goal she sends her shot across the goal and in at the far post 6-0.

Half-time Fulbourn Bluebirds 6-0 Isleham United Ladies.

Fulbourn in control of the match as the referee blows for half-time have been clinical when put through on goal putting their chances away a rapid 3 goal opening leaving Isleham shattered and on the back foot. Know they have little chance to get back into the match but return to the pitch in good spirits knowing it's the last game of the season and they may as well enjoy it as Fulbourn get the 2nd half underway.

Is a quieter opening to the 2nd half Isleham have the ball as Sophie Brocklesby bringing the ball into the Fulbourn half looks to get it out to McAllister moving into space on the right wing, coming to the by line McAllister looks to drive with the ball into the area, but runs into traffic and is eventually crowded off the ball.

Sarah-Louise Bodger has come on for Fulbourn at the start of the 2nd period she smashes a stinging shot into the box from the edge of the area turning in a cross pinged into her by Rule out on the left flank, the ball is blocked, but spins away for a goal kick as Bodger's shot hits team mate Pinner in the side of the head as she has no time to avoid it.

Isleham win a free kick inside the Fulbourn half, the ball is sent in towards the D there are plenty of bodies around it as McAllister get's hold of it for the visitors on the turn she shifts the ball between her feet opening up a shooting opportunity pulls the trigger a Fulbourn boot flicks out taking the sting off the shot with D'Coast beyond down to bring it up into her glove.

GOAL! Although they have had plenty of corners in the game so far Fulbourn have yet to score from one this changes with one from the left the ball is played in Pinner comes towards the ball and stooping forwards flicks the ball on with the back of her head to the edge of the area where it is met by Anderson who sends the ball with pace into the back of the net 7-0.

Anderson has to come off soon after as she goes down with an injury. Isleham are having more of the ball in the Fulbourn half but with a bare 11 are starting to feel the pace of the game with Fulbourn having the substitutes to rotate and rest players, McAllister is looking to the right channel more in an effort to get into a crossing position no one can cover the ground to try and attack the ball though.

Isleham have a break on as a Fulbourn attack breaks down bringing the ball out is sent up to Todd she is clear and running towards the box D'Costa is coming to close her down, she has McAllister clear on her right, looks to put her through gets the ball too close to the Fulbourn keeper though and D'Costa gets enough on it to slow the ball down and retrieve it.

GOAL! Rule scores again as the ball is send long up the pitch as Isleham loose possession out on the left of the pitch in plenty of space Rule chases the ball down and turning to look at her options takes on the shot sending the ball in towards goal heading in under the bar Mynott get's something on the shot knocking it down but it drops beyond her and bounces over the line before she can sweep it out 8-0.

Rule is through on goal again moments later on the right this time has Hill with her though as she tries the shot from a tight angle pulls it across the face of goal and out. Getting tired Isleham's defence is getting turned by Fulbourn with Rule and Geal both looking to peel into space wide on the flanks. A shot is fired in from just over the half way lie by Fulbourn's Molloy stings Mynott's gloves but the keeper brings it down well and claims with Rule looking to pounce.

GOAL! Mynott is unlucky as Fulbourn add a 9th goal to their tally. The Isleham keeper doing well to initially save from a cross/shot fired in from the left into her near post she get a good fist on it the ball is played back though in as the defence pushes up drops kindly for Bodger who springs the offside trap Mynott races out to the edge of her box to close her down, Bodger pops the ball over her and into the net beyond 9-0.

GOAL! 10 minutes left on the clock and captain Krissie Taylor gets on the score sheet the ball is played over from the right hand side of the pitch Taylor runs after it has no one marking her turns and brings the ball back in looks to send a low shot in to the near post Mynott is there, however the shot squirms in 10-0.

GOAL! Is a rout entering the last 5 minutes with the light starting to fade and the gnats getting hungry Rule completes her 2nd hat-trick of the night as Geal finds the energy to travel half the length of the pitch with the ball at her feet, whips the cross in with pace as Mynott attempts to come out to stop her the ball going beyond her leaving Rule to run in a tap home from 2 yards 11-0.

Fulbourn continue to press going into the closing moments Mynott saves from a 30 yard curling effort from Michela Garner, then again from Rosie Boyns as she fizz's a shot with power behind it into the area. The final whistle blows and Fulbourn win the match 11-0.

The result see's Fulbourn turn their negative goal difference into a positive one close the gap to Cambridge WFC Reserves to 5 points with their last 2 games against them, will have gained plenty of confidence from tonight's performance were clinical and took their chances.

A tough end to a tough season for Isleham a heavy defeat their ability showed in patches but the belief was knocked out of them, still good to see them leaving the pitch in good spirits and will regroup for a new season and a new campaign.

Always a tough game to cover and report but that's football my thanks to the coaching staff of both teams for being so accommodating and helping me out with the squad details tonight.
