SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge - The Final Update

   Here it is then the final update to the SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge of 2014, and it's disappointment on one hand as I didn't quite make the 90 matches in the revised Match Challenge after completing the original 50 Match Challenge way back in July. The final tally 88! I say on one hand there's disappointment but truthfully I'm thrilled to have gotten to 88 and it certainly wasn't for lack of trying in the final push that I didn't get to 90.

   Had a potential of 15 matches over the last period between reaching Game #80 and striving for 90 but 7 of those matches were postponed, some due to the weather, one through the opposition failing to get together a team, but the most frustrating thing for not only myself but fans of football and I can include both genders in this is fixtures simply disappearing from the scheduling. Nothing I can do about it have been the victim more than once turn up at a venue and it simply isn't happening. Now I know growing a fanbase is low on most clubs priorities (growing a team is hard enough) especially the lower down the pyramid you go, but lack of information is a pain.

   Not easy I know, I'm trying to keep my own website updated, write a blog, have a full time job, two gerbils to look after etc.. etc. Clubs rely on volenteers and they do a marvellous job I take my hat off to every single one, what we need is more I suppose. No doubt the girls that want to play the game are there in good numbers, is the infrastructure growing with them? Not an easy task at grassroots level resources are pinched. The FAWSL has helped bring the game on no end these past 4 years.

   Have learnt a hell of a lot about the women's game over these 88 matches, especially in the East of the country, have loved covering and watching every single game, have met plenty of wonderful and helpful people too, have never gotten fed up with it either. All 88 of my matches are accompanied with a (usually out of focus) picture from my mobile phone on my twitter feed @GilharrenD with the caption (SWF Blog 50) or 90 Game #

   88 women's football matches, thought I'd have a go at picking my top three of 2014.

                  1st - Sunday 19th January - UEA Women 4-3 Fakenham Town Ladies

         This a was classic cup encounter in the Norfolk Ladies Cup. UEA Women in good form and riding high in Norfolk Women's Division One were clear favourites against fellow Division One competitors Fakenham Town Ladies. It was a backs against the wall defensive display in the 1st half UEA Women coming after the Fakenham goal created plenty of chances but at the break had only found the net once. Fakenham came out 2nd half took the game to UEA Women pulled the scores level early on, UEA Women responded regained the lead, Fakenham came back 2-2 it was end to end. UEA Women scored again 3-2, Fakenham on the counter nearly pulled it level for a 3rd time before UEA Women broke and scored a 4th. Fakenham never gave up got it back to 4-3, UEA Women held on to win the match, it was a stand out game of 2014.

             2nd - Sunday 11th May - Chelsea Ladies 3-5 Arsenal Ladies (aet)

    Played on neutral ground at Woking FC this was another fantastic cup match in the semi-finals of the FA Women's Cup against Chelsea Ladies & Arsenal Ladies these were two teams that badly wanted to reach the final, 0-0 though at half time it was Chelsea who would register on the scoresheet 1st looked to be putting Arsenal under some pressure. Arsenal hit back straight away Kelly Smith with the goal. Chelsea's Yuki Ogimi makes it 2-1 before Smith scores a beauty of a goal from long range to make it 2-2 and send the game into extra-time.
    Arsenal start the better with Danielle Carter and Shinubo Ohno scoring to give them a 4-2 lead. Chelsea aren't done though a great solo run from Eniola Aluko see's her pull it back to 3-4. Casey Stoney has the final say for Arsenal heading the ball into the back of the net to seal Arsenal's place in the 2014 FA Women's Cup final which they would go onto win.

            3rd - Saturday 14th June - Scotland Women 1-3 Sweden Women

    Picking a 3rd game wasn't so easy but I've chosen the Women's World Cup qualifying match between Scotland & Sweden played up at Fir Park back in June this year. I do like the Sweden team and have wanted to see them play for a long time, it was also a good opportunity to see the Scottish Women's national team as having watched several of their star players perform consistantly well in the FAWSL they were and still continue to be a rapidly emerging team. Were looking good in qualifying had yet though to face group fasvourites Sweden and the Swede's weren't unestermating Scotland either.
   As it was the visitors scored an early goal through Caroline (please come to the FAWSL) Seger. Scotland's Kim Little pulled the scores level converting a penalty. Sweden though lead at the break with Kosavare Asllani scoring. She goes on to add her 2nd and Sweden's 3rd in the 2nd half proving to be too strong for a spirited Scotland on the day. Was an added highlight to meet Sweden coach Pia Sundhage after the match.

     Some great highlights and I look forwards to many more in 2015 will no doubt be covering women's football matches all over the place and will see you all and some point I'm sure. SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge update - Games 71 - 80

   The latest update of my SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge - now the 90 Match Challenge, the goal to attempt to watch a target of 90 women's football matches in 2014. Getting close now into November and games 71 - 80 have been clocked up.

    Has been as always a varied and interesting array of women's football leagues and competitions to watch. The final day of both the FAWSL 1 & 2 seasons last month. The winter leagues though are in full swing now have seen action in the FAWPL South East Division One, a top of the table clash in Norfolk Women's Division One, a double bill of women's football in Cambridgeshire's Women's Championship South. A Ryman Cup tie, and lastly the FA Women's Cup.

Time is running out to get them in, but on paper I have enough scheduled to reach that 90 match goal, only the weather can thwart my attempts, and there's nothing I can do about that. Plenty more great women's football to come this year looking forwards to what I hope is a final and successful last update..

SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge update - 61 - 70

    A little overdue this update what with everything else that has been going on games 61-70 of the SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge.. now the 90 Match Challenge. Actually reached 70 matches for 2014 and are well into the 70's so best get you all updated on where I have been since the last update.

   Hasn't been a whole lot of FAWSL match action just the 2 matches and they have both been to see Notts County Ladies. Have instead been focused on the East of England what with the launch of my new website www.womensfootballeast.com and it's twitter feed @WF_East.

    Has been another interesting and educational spell as I learn more and more about the women's football set up in the East of England and have to say the clubs I've dealt with so far couldn't have been more helpful as I look to see just what it is I can do to help promote the game I love seeing played.

    Have covered a variety of leagues and competitions once again from the FA Women's Premier League (FAWPL) South East Division One, football from the Eastern Region Women's Football League (ERWFL) Premier Division too, aswell as an FA Women's Cup match, FAWPL league cup match and a handful of matches from my native Norfolk too.

   Plenty of action packed games with an average of over 4 goals per game these past 10 have been exciting to watch, travelled to new parts of the region seen new teams play and plan to see more new teams as the year goes on. With the winter leagues in full swing choosing which match to attend will be the real challenge allow with the end of the year closing by I'd best get a wriggle on if I want to make the 90!

SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge update - Games 51 - 60

   In the last installment of the SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge the headline was - Challenge Complete! Did it reached the 50 matches in the calender year of 2014 by the end of July.. and then I set myself a new challenge, the SWF Blog 90 Match Challenge, to see if I could watch 90 women's football matches by the end of 2014.

   To that end another 10 matches have been racked up, again full of variety and plenty of travelling, a real lack of FAWSL 1 match action as there have been very few fixtures happening in what really is the height of the summer. That though has been discussed at length and can't see it improving anytime soon, going to be a busy September and October for several clubs though.

   Never the less, there has been some FAWSL action, especially WSL 2 and I have gotten round to see all the teams in the new league play this season, a mini target of mine, Durham Women and Watford Ladies having been saved till last, is certainly proving to be an interesting and competitive league with some of the early season strugglers finding their feet and making progress up the table.

    Had a trip down to Bristol Academy.. is a long way but I do like the Stoke Gifford Stadium there is always a great atomosphere. An England Women's international, should have been 2 but car trouble scuppered a trip to Wales to see the team qualify for next summers World Cup in Canada.

    Have taken in a few pre season friendlies as teams prepare for the new winter leagues. Also during August I launched my new website www.womensfootballeast.com exciting times and there has been a great response to it, have plenty of work to do but it is something I've been thinking about for a while now and feel the teams in my region warrant the added coverage and promotion, just the beginning looking forwards to seeing where it will go.

   Rounding of their has been a season opener in the new FA Women's Premier League, South East Division One and a new cup competition - that morphed into 2 the FAWPL Cup.

      50 matches watched and most reported on too in the Supporting Women's Football Blog. I really have enjoyed the experience watching the women's game for all aspects from the grassroots football of my native Norfolk all the way to International matches, cup and league, friendlies and finals. Met so many fantastic people along the way too. Have clocked up the miles (well the car does that part I guess) is in need of another service the 2nd of the year! The British road network can be trying at times and the weather.. well unpredictable.

 

    The 1st 40 games raced along was racking them up in double quick time.. but the last 10 took a little longer as the FAWSL season break happened and I was forced to have a rest myself, although to be fair I think I needed it too, recharge the batteries and go again, still it's only the end of July and game #50 has been ticked off..

     50 matches complete all in the cause of supporting women's football and not once have I stopped and wondered why on earth I'm doing this. It's always entertaining in the women's game the ball never stops moving it's all I can do to keep up with my note taking sometimes the hand writing is terrible but the notes jog the memory I relive the game I watched as I write the report.

 

   Now what do I do?

 

  50 matches complete I could stop here right?

 

   Of course that's not going to happen still I need to think up a new plan. If you've read the 1st entry to this thread you'll know I reeled myself in somewhat had the crazy notion I might be able to do 100 women's football matches in a calender year (maybe I will one day), 7 months have passed though so another 50 might be beyond me still I reckon I can get close so the next picture I take on my twitter feed at a women's football match will start with (SWF Blog 90) that is a challenge 90 women's football matches in 2014 got my work cut out (the car just groaned). I'm looking forwards to it already so let's end this post like the rest...

SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge update - Games 21-30

    Games #11 - 20 came thick and fast, but so too have the next 10 matches of the SWF Blog 50 match challenge as the winter leagues draw to season's end and the FAWSL 1 & 2 begins have been another 10 enjoyable matches to watch. Plenty of travelling and my 1st footballing weekender. Saw the 1st ever match in the new FAWSL 2. Went and banged my head (at work) getting a black eye and swollen knee for my efforts, undeterred (or stubborn) I carried on regardless.

      The opening matches in both the FAWSL 1 & 2 have been very entertaining and particulary with WSL 1 the results very hard to predict. In FAWSL 2 Doncaster Rovers Belles have gotten off to a flying start. The league campaign has barely begun and things make way for the group matches in this years Continental Cup. In between the FAWSL matches various cup semi-finals have taken place in the South East Combination and Norfolk Women's league cups. Last but one was a Norfolk women's leagues double bill which saw Thorpe United Ladies claim the Norfolk Division One title.

    Also took in 3 matches on the 23rd April at Maltings Meadow home of Bungay Town Ladies as they took on Long Stratton Ladies & Bohemians in the Bungay Town Ladies Challenge Cup but as each match was just 50 mins in length they didn't count towards the SWF Blog 50 match challenge. Been fun didn't take long to rack them up and as May begins the fixtures keep coming think and fast.

SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge update - Games 11 - 20

   The 1st 10 games of the SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge had been a real challenge in terms of the weather the sheer volume of matches called off because of the seemingly never ending rain had played havoc with the footballing calender. I did find a match on a Sunday on most occassions and the 1st 10 have been chalked off, in comparison games 11 -20 have raced by been clocked up in double quick time but in the process been no less enjoyable.
  
    Again the variety of the winter leagues set up gave me a chance to explore various different leagues and competitions from County to Combination League, two rounds of the Women's FA Cup and a County Cup Final plus a Champions League Quarter Final! I've worn out two note pads now making notes for match reports my handwriting has not improved one iota! I can understand it some how and it's jogs the memory and gives me a great platform to write a balanced report and sometimes that can be a challenge, more importantly though I enjoy writing them and hope you enjoy reading them too.

SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge Update - The 1st 10

   At the start of 2014 I set the challenge of attending a minimum of 50 women's football matches in the year, and with plenty of great matches to attend over the coming months I have never the less gotten off to a great start despite the terrible wet weather that has played havoc with the footballing calender up and down the land have found a match on somewhere albeit on several occassions game B, C, D..... or even H, have seen a variety of leagues from county to combination, cup and friendly and have written a report on several have certainly been some entertaining games, and been an educational experience to as I look to broaden my knowledge of the traditional winter leagues that I hadn't previously followed in any great depth, so here is a roll call of the matches attended so far;-

SWF Blog 50 Match Challenge

   The New Year is a time for new resolutions, new starts, and all of that. I don't really go in for the resolution thing because like 99% of us I'm rubbish at it. That being said I have set myself a small challenge for 2014 that is to attend at least 50 women's football matches! Now originally when I had this brainwave it was going to be 100! Whoa steady on boy!! Reeled it in to a more modest target so the real challenge is to see if I can break it.
    There are afterall a few factors that have to be considered, A) the British weather, B) the FAWSL fixture scheduling and C) the government introducing a tax rebate on petrol for supporters of women's football. None of these things are likely to be favourable and with the nearest WSL team a 2 hour drive from Norfolk the car will be needing a service far too regulary. That though won't stop me looking forwards to it. Plenty of winter league action happening before then however to attend.    Not that I'm the only fan who will be clocking up the games sure plenty of you will be out to beat that tally and our paths will cross somewhere.... who'd have thought this neutral lark could be so enjoyable. Here's to supporting women's football in 2014.
